Blues Club
Spent last week in
Memphis at the International
Blues Challenge. Too many bands, too much to do,
so little time. 220+ acts competing for the top spot. The level
of talent made judging difficult--but not too difficult not
to want to do it again. 5 acts from Florida made it to the finals
in the band and solo/duo categories. Says a lot for the quality
of the blues in the Sunshine State.
Can't tell you much
about the shows last weekend, other than both were SRO sellouts.
From all reports, a good time was had by all!
We have a bunch of
stuff this week and next. The DelGrosso and Richardson band
on Friday, Eddie Shaw on Saturday, the Triple R Horse Rescue
benefit on Sunday, Johnny Rawls on Valentine's Day, and Big
Sandy & The Fly-Rite Boys on Thursday. So here we go.
The
Rich DelGrosso & John Del Toro Richardson Band
make their inaugural BBC appearance on Friday, Feb.
10. Both were leading Pro-Jams and workshops during
the IBC competition last week. Rich DelGrosso, from Houston,
is a highly regarded and award winning Mandolin player who has
garnered 7 Blues Music Award Nominations. Been trying to get
him for a long time. His band partner, John Del Toro Richardson,
also from Houston, is a mighty hot guitar picker who won the
IBC Albert King Guitarist Award in 2005. John also received
a Grammy and a BMA as the guitarist on Pinetop Perkins' cd,
"Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen". Rich
and John mix up contemporary blues and roots with a Texas flair
for heat and taste. They are joined by the rhythm section of
Ed Starkey on bass and Carl Owens on drums. Their cd, "Time
Slips On By" and their live performances have received
accolades from across the music spectrum.
“FOUR
STARS!.. the two share the ability to convey boundless and romantic
uncertainty, supported by a crackerjack rhythm section.."
Frank-John Hadley, Downbeat
"A breath of
fresh air for the blues." Gary von Tersch, Blues and Rhythm,
UK " …entwine ass-shakin’ funky, countried,
and big and soulful blues on a mandolin and a guitar with a
wicked hot band in their engine room…You’d be hard-pressed
to find anyone else playing the blues like DelGrosso and Del
Toro Richardson." Tom Clarke, Hittin' The Note
"This is a refreshing,
rather unique sound. It’s not only the clarity of DelGrosso’s
electric mandolin, but the interplay with Richardson’s
full-bodied guitar that meshes so well." Jim Hynes, Elmore
Magazine
Really good stuff.
Unique and energetic rug cuttin' music. Highly recommended.

Legendary
saxophone great "Eddie
"House Rockin' " Shaw & The Wolf Gang
g blow in from Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 11
with classic old school Chicago blues. These guys have become
a club favorite over the years. Eddie was the sax player and
band leader for the legendary Howlin' Wolf until the Wolf died
in 1976. For over 40 years, Eddie's been blowing the sax (tenor
and alto) and harmonica, singing, writing, and leading bands.
His songs have been recorded by too many blues legends to list
including John Hammond, Willie Dixon, Otis Rush, Howlin' Wolf,
and Magic Sam. He is one of the unquestioned masters of the
blues saxophone. His accolades include the 2007 and 2006 Blues
Music Award for Best Instrumentalist--Horn; a the Living Blues
Critics 1996 Most Outstanding Blues Musician (horn), 1996
Winner of the Howling Wolf Award at the Chicago Blues Festival
and 10 Blues Music Award nominations, including 2010 and 2011
for Best Instrumentalist-Saxophone. His long time band, one
of the hottest blues bands in Chicago, includes his son, Eddie
Vaan Shaw, a renowned guitar player and songwriter in his own
right, and bassist and vocalist Lafayette "Shorty"
Gilbert who has been Eddie's bass player for over 20 years.
This is Chicago blues at its very finest--the real deal and
a perfect fit for the jook. Highly recommended. Listen to some

Bring
your honey to the BBC on Tuesday, Feb. 14 as the BBC
celebrates Valentine's Day
with a special show with the sexy, soulful, silky smooth offerings
of JJohnny
Rawls for another of his hot and heavy shows. He's
colorful, smooth, charming, talented and a lady's man who oozes
romance and seduction with swoonin' tunes--a perfect fit for
Valentine's Day. Raised in Mississippi, Johnny lives the music
he writes and sings, with his southern roots indelibly etched
in his soul-blues style. He knows how to connect with a crowd
and get folks outta their chairs. From north to south, the reviews
are the same:
"a great singer
and a fantastic showman... Rawls filled the dance floor
from the very first note and kept them dancing all night long."
Blues on
Stage
"Mississippi
soul-blues man who wows crowds with his smoldering vocals and
guitar style." The Charlotte Observer
"...an ace band
leader, singer, songwriter and chitlin-circuit fave who knows
all about crowd pleasing." Minneapolis Star and Tribune
Johnny is nationally
renowned for his soulful blues style. He won the 2010 Blues
Music Award for Soul/Blues Album of the Year for "Ace of
Spades". Living Blues magazine named his cd, "Red
Cadillac" the Best Soul Blues Album in 2009. He has also
been nominated for three Blues Music Awards for Soul/Blues Artist
of the Year. This is a great opportunity to see Johnny in the
cozy confines of the jook with your main squeeze wrapped around
you on the dance floor and a romantic bonfire to heat things
up between sets. The Johnny Rawls provides the spark. The BBC
will provide the candles, chocolates, flowers, bonfire and libations
to fan the flames. The rest is up to you. Check out Johnny at:

On
Thursday, Feb. 16, it's an encore appearance for The
Rockabilly Hall of Fame enshrined Big
Sandy & His Fly-rite Boys. This retro lower
west coast based amalgamation of musicians and styles is making
their way east with a weeknight stop-over in Tallahassee. Founded
in 1988, the band has proven adept at combining rockabilly,
western swing, rock 'n roll, Memphis soul, and alt-country rock
with a captivating stage presence. The group's latest (of 17)
cds, "Turntable Matinee" and "Power of the 45"
exemplify the retro- notion
of the band's signature style. It ain't blues but it sho'nuff
fits the ol' road house in the backwoods. From the Grand Ol'
Opry to Conan, these guys have been touring for over 20 years.
The band is led by "Big Sandy" (not a misnomer) Rusty
Williams on vocals and guitars, Ashley Kingman on guitar, Jeff
West on upright bass and vocals, and Joe Perez on drums (possibly
a peddle steel player, too). Really good stuff. Lots of fun.
Lots of dancin'. A don't miss and a real bargain at only $8
in advance at http://www.bradfordvilleblues.com and for students
and blues organization members. $10 on the day of show for all
others. Check 'em out, put on your high water pants, poodle
skirts, bobbie socks, dancin' boots, roll up cigarettes in your
sleeve, grease bck your duck-tails and start the weekend early.
