GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
Yesterday our industry received the support of Attorney General Bill McCollum
in opposition to any raids on the State Transportation Trust Fund. Attorney
General McCollum voiced his opposition to the raid in a letter addressed to
Speaker of the House Larry Cretul. Following is a press release we issued this morning:
Statement By:
Bob Burleson, President, Florida Transportation Builders' Association
Regarding AG McCollum's Advocacy for the State Transportation Trust Fund
|
"The Florida Transportation Builders' Association (FTBA) commends Attorney General
(AG) Bill McCollum for his stance on keeping the State Transportation Trust Fund (STTF) intact.
Yesterday, Speaker Cretul received a letter from AG McCollum which clearly acknowledged
the economic impact the transportation contracting industry has on Florida's long-term
financial viability. Throughout his tenure, AG McCollum has heard from citizens about the
struggles they have faced and recognizes the State Transportation Trust Fund's potential
for reversing our state's rising unemployment figures.
We applaud AG McCollum for his request to keep the STTF whole and determination to keep
Floridians employed. Like FTBA, AG McCollum has called on the Florida House of Representatives
to adopt the Senate's budget position to not raid the STTF. Just as AG McCollum has stated,
any reduction in funds from the State Transportation Trust Fund - let alone the more than $450
million in proposed cuts - will ultimately compound the challenges Florida faces. FTBA
appreciates the support of AG McCollum and his bearing on this issue. Stealing multimillions
of dollars from the State Transportation Trust Fund will further Florida's economic downward
spiral and have a counter reaction to any job creation initiatives that are undertaken this year."
