The Department of
BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE
Florida State University
Tallahassee, Florida
|
Mission
The mission of the Department of Biological Science is to engage in graduate training and
research in modern biology and to provide excellent undergraduate instruction. The biological
sciences are a broad array of subdisciplines that embrace topics from the functional significance
of molecular shapes to the responses of aquatic ecosystems to pollution. Our department's
programs accommodate that range and bring the excitement of many areas of modern biology
to students at many levels.
Teaching
Our faculty are seriously committed to undergraduate teaching. They include eight winners of
University Teaching Awards (Balkwill, Elam, Elliott, Hofer, Outlaw, Quadagno, Travis,
Williams) and one winner of the Distinguished Teaching Award (Hofer). In our thriving
program of directed-individual-study modules, undergraduates work on their own research
projects in faculty laboratories. The faculty have endowed their own academic scholarship for
undergraduate biology majors, which is awarded to two students each academic year.
Research
The research accomplishments of the faculty are illustrated in many ways. The extensive
contract and grant activity reflects their continuing success at acquiring and retaining
ever-more-competitive research funding. The department includes two members of the
National Academy of Sciences (Beidler, Caspar) and several Fellows of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science; as well as internationally recognized leaders in a
number of disciplines and several authors of "Citation Classics." The faculty have received
extensive recognition within the university; four are Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professors
(Beidler, Friedmann, Hofer, Travis), three are FSU Distinguished Research Professors
(Freeman, Graziadei, James), and seven are Florida State University Developing Scholars
(Balkwill, Bates, Ellington, Freeman, Meredith, Moerland, Travis).
